Why We Chose Virginia Tile for Every Bathroom in Our First Luxury Spec Home Build

When designing and building our very first luxury spec home, we knew we had to partner with brands that aligned with our design ethos and provided the kind of quality and versatility that could help bring our vision to life. That’s why, for each and every bathroom in our Washington House project, we turned to Virginia Tile. Their wide selection made it easy for each bathroom to be unique and themed, whether that meant recycled, eco-friendly tiles in the en-suite or tile from female-owned manufacturers for the primary bathroom. Here are the bathrooms and the beautiful tiles we chose.
This powder room was designed with careful consideration to maximize the limited space. We chose an antique mirror tile to cover the entire wall, creating the illusion of a larger room. The mirror tiles were spaced closely together to mimic the appearance of wallpaper, with a tight grout joint and matching black grout for a seamless finish. This tile requires precise installation, as clean cuts are essential to the overall look. One of the standout features of this design is the ability to catch a reflection of yourself descending the staircase while standing in the room.
In the primary bathroom, we selected a tile featuring a printed lotus pattern on Thassos marble. Thassos, a white marble, acts as a blank canvas, making it perfect for showcasing detailed designs. We chose the lotus pattern for its botanical essence, as it brings a feminine, calming, and peaceful feel to the space. To enhance the feminine theme, all of these tiles were sourced from female-owned businesses.
This bathroom is part of what we called the "lady’s lounge," located on the top floor of the home—a serene, all-day retreat designed for the lady of the house. The entire space is designed to evoke a connection with nature. The walls are adorned with a textured sandstone tile in a geometric pattern, with LED lighting illuminating the intricate design, while the floor is a glass pebble mosaic that brings a natural, calming feel to the room. And yes, that’s a waterfall faucet positioned above a bench!
This bathroom was a bit tricky to design due to its tight space, but I embraced the challenge. I decided to use small square tiles to create an accent color on both walls—a beautiful, washed-out turquoise blue that adds a subtle pop of color. To give the space more dimension, I incorporated three-dimensional "wow" tiles from Virginia Tile. These tiles create an interesting texture and surface, and when the light hits them just right, the effect is fun, dynamic, and different. For the floor, we continued the charred wood tile plank over the shower curb and into the vanity area. This seamless transition adds depth to the space, making the bathroom appear much larger by allowing the eye to move across the entire floor without interruption.
