How to Place Art: The Ultimate Personalization

How to Place Art: The Ultimate Personalization

August 27, 2024

Art is a reflection of a homeowner's personality and the soul of a space. When helping clients choose and place art, we ensure that every piece tells a story, adds energy to the room, and creates a deep connection with the environment. Our approach goes beyond selecting something that simply looks good—we focus on how each artwork will enhance the emotional experience of a room while harmonizing with the overall design.

The process begins with understanding our clients' personal style, tastes, and the atmosphere they want to create. Whether they’re drawn to bold, provocative art or calming, serene pieces, we curate selections that resonate with their unique vision. We also consider how the art will interact with the space in terms of scale, balance, and placement. Larger, statement pieces often serve as focal points, drawing attention and grounding the room, while smaller works can create flow or add nuance when grouped thoughtfully.

Lighting is another crucial element we focus on during the placement process. The right lighting can transform how art is experienced.

By integrating scale, lighting, and balance into the placement process, we create spaces where art doesn’t just hang on walls but becomes an integral part of the home’s story, bringing inspiration and beauty to everyday life.

For the Winnetka Contemporary Luxury Home project, we had the opportunity to use all of our art selection, placement and showcasing skills.

This whimsical sculpture features a figure of a woman on a piece of driftwood, floating on an acrylic glass table in front of a window with a view of Lake Michigan. The placement creates the illusion that she’s drifting across the lake itself. This playful use of placement reflects the homeowner’s fun personality and adds an unexpected twist to the room’s design.

In a space designed for nighttime relaxation, we installed lunar artwork with crystallized illumination that hangs below a ceiling with fiber optic constellations. This celestial theme creates a serene and imaginative atmosphere perfect for unwinding, while also serving as a conversation piece. And as a bonus, there is a neighboring champagne refrigerator!

Chosen for a fashion-forward client, these busts embody their decadent style and bold personality, becoming striking focal points within the room.
